Abstract
We show that the triangular Yafet–Kittel magnetic ordering in AB2X4 spinels, in which the sublattice A spins are split into two noncollinear sublattices, leads to the appearance of electric polarization, and thus the crystal becomes multiferroic. Calculation of the magnetic and magnetoelectric properties of MnCr2S4 considering single-ion anisotropy illustrates the proposed mechanism.
