Abstract
Objectives: Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia. The renin-angiotensin system may play a role in the pathophysiology of AF. The association of ACE with AT has been reported. We investigated the association of ACE gene polymorphism with AF in our population.
Methods: We have examined this polymorphism in 97 patients and 83 controls. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and restriction fragment length polymorphism were used to analyse gene polymorphisms.
Results: Analyses were conducted by gender, because the ACE2 gene is on the X chromosome. None of the genders were associated with ACE2 gene polymorphisms and hypertension [(intron 1: X2 = 4.4, p=0.35 in females and, X2 = 3.9, p=0.41 in males), (intron 3: X2 = 4.0, p=0.40 in females and, X2 = 9.3, p=0.53 in males)].
Conclusions: In this study, we found that the polymorphisms of ACE I/D gene polymorphism was associated with AF in our population.
