Correlates of protection for Plasmodium falciparum malaria vaccine development: current knowledge and future research

1. James G Beeson leads a research group focused on clinical and population studies of malaria in Africa, Asia and Papua New Guinea, and primarily aims to understand human immunity to malaria and develop vaccines against malaria. He trained in clinical medicine and public health, and completed a PhD on malaria in pregnancy at the University of Melbourne (Australia) and Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (Australia). He is currently Head of the Centre for Biomedical Research at the Burnet Institute (Australia).

2. A National Health and Medical Research Council (Australia) public health fellow, Freya JI Fowkes is Head of Malaria and Infectious Disease Epidemiology at the Burnet Institute. She is involved in examining the epidemiology of malaria and analyzing malaria immunoepidemiological data.

3. After a postdoctoral appointment at the Walter & Eliza Hall Institute (Australia) from 2005 to 2009, Linda Reiling continues her work on understanding immune mechanisms in human malaria at the Burnet Institute.

4. Faith H Osier is a Clinical Research Fellow at the Kenya Medical Research Institute, Centre for Geographic Medicine Research (Kenya). She studies naturally acquired immunity to malaria in endemic populations, to identify correlates of protection that could inform the development of malaria vaccines.

5. Damien R Drew is a senior posdoctoral researcher and has been based at the Burnet Institute since 2011. His work focuses on vaccines and protective immune responses to blood-stage antigens from Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax.

6. Graham V Brown is the Foundation Director of the Nossal Institute for Global Health, University of Melbourne. His research interests include immunity to malaria, particularly malaria in pregnancy, and the challenge of malaria elimination.
