3. Hendrik KF van Saene studied medicine at the University of Leuven, Belgium, acquiring a MD in 1973. He specialized at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, obtaining his PhD in 1982. In 1987, he was appointed as Senior Lecturer at the University of Liverpool, England; he was awarded FRCPath in 1997. His field of research is prevention of severe infections in the critically ill using selective decontamination of the digestive tract. He has published 250 peer-reviewed articles and 100 book chapters.
