Surgical management of vesicoureteral reflux

Abstract

There are three main options for the management of vesicoureteral reflux: antibiotic prophylaxis; open/laparoscopic surgery; and endoscopic injection. These main categories can be further divided into specific methods of treatment related to surgical technique and type of material used in the endoscopic injection, with continued advances to improve outcome and decrease morbidity. This article will summarize some of the older techniques and review some of the more recent advances utilized to correct vesicoureteral reflux, with the intention of allowing providers to choose how to best treat their patients.
