Abstract

In this article, Barbara urda reflects on what presence is all about, leaning on her fieldwork experience in Bhubaneswar, capital of the Indian State of Odisha, from September 2021 onwards, marked by the constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic. The fact that she was forced to adapt her fieldwork, modify the ways in which physical contact could be established with her research participants, raised into prominence how different modalities of being present generated different ways of knowing. She here reflects on the relational nature of the phenomenon of presence within a network of both human and non-human, living and non-living beings.
