Abstract
In this article, Oumaima Hajri dedicates her focus to the ethical and societal dimensions of artificial intelligence (AI). She explores two primary themes: the concealed costs of AI and the significance of grounding AI development in critical theory. The reflection underscores the need to consider AI's broader impact, particularly who benefits and who faces marginalization. Furthermore, the reflection emphasizes the importance of comprehending the underlying theories before pursuing technological innovations to avoid reducing complex societal issues to simplistic technological solutions. AI is depicted as a multifaceted field, incorporating insights from various disciplines, necessitating careful consideration of its use as an instrument, infrastructure, and ideology. Each of these facets brings opportunities and challenges, particularly in addressing biases and ethical concerns associated with AI's role as an instrument for knowledge amplification, its environmental footprint as an infrastructure, and its underlying ideologies shaping its development and impact. The reflection underscores the importance of critical examination, ethical considerations, and a shift in cultural representations to ensure that AI benefits all of humanity equitably while addressing its environmental and societal consequences.
