Abstract
The uniform-slender-body theory is adapted to provide first-order estimates of the lateral force and yaw moment experienced by a slow moving vessel in the presence of vertical-sided obstacles. The resulting numerical procedure, which involves only the recursive calculation of coefficients and evaluation of integrals, yields results which demonstrate the considerable hazards to be faced in safely maneuvering the vessel past piers and islands or alongside channel walls.
