Daggers of New Guinea: distribution, styles and functions

Abstract

Th is review is focused on bone daggers, the objects, which were widespread during colonial era, as well as in earlier times in New Guinea. Production and use of these daggers has decreased due to modernization occurring among inhabitants of the island. Th ese, indeed specific tools, were manufactured from bones gained from cassowaries, crocodiles and humans. Th e description of the main types of bones daggers and knives linked to particular areas of New Guinea are examined in the review. Article also follows its aesthetic values, functionalities, along with its social importance and cultural symbolism.
