Abstract

ABSTRACT Erythema ab igne (EAI) is a cutaneous rash that develops secondary to prolonged exposure to heat. The appearance is characterized by reticulated erythema and hyperpigmentation with telangiectasia. In some instances, EAI may be a consequence of clinical conditions that cause chronic pain. In this case, we illustrate the onset of this finding in the setting of painful chronic pancreatitis. Although considered benign, EAI may increase the risk of nonmelanoma skin cancers. Treatment primarily consists of avoidance of localized heat exposure and surveillance for malignancy.
