Abstract

The Jade Field is located in Block 30/2c in the UK Central North Sea and was discovered by well 30/2c-3 in 1996. It was then appraised by well 30/2c-4 in 1997, with first production in 2002. The decision to develop the field after only one appraisal well led to a degree of uncertainty in the field reserves and estimated production profiles. Consequently, the development programme was designed to include an element of further appraisal. The development plan included simultaneous drilling and production operations so reservoir pressure depletion, due to production, was recognized as a significant project challenge. Detailed contingency plans were formulated to ensure that well objectives were achieved, despite the potentially problematic reservoir conditions. The field produces gas and condensate from the Triassic Joanne and Judy Sandstones and is classified as a high-pressure, high-temperature field, with a wet gas-in-place estimate for the Joanne Sandstone of around 1000 BCF and for the Judy Sandstone of 150 BCF. This paper outlines the petroleum geology and development history of the field and the current understanding of these complex reservoirs.
