Abstract
AbstractThe paper describes an investigation into the groundwater pressure distribution in two sections through the 46 m high London Clay cliffs at Warden Point, Isle of Sheppey. Over 50 piezometers were installed, and these show a groundwater pressure regime which indicates a significant degree of response to stress relief. The paper describes the influence of these pressures on the mechanics of failure of the cliffs, and the engineering implications of their presence.
