Abstract
ABSTRACTAcid hydrolysis of cellulose leads to the formation of nanowhiskers, which can self-assemble to form a liquid crystal phase at a concentration determined by their aspect ratio. This work investigates the properties of the un-hydrolysed materials on which the length of the nanowhiskers depend. It was found that the length is determined by the branching pattern of the cellulose microfibrils and the crystallinity of the material.
