Abstract
Engineering courses suffer declining recruitment and high attrition rates. This paper presents students' preconceptions, conceptions and reflections on their courses and profession. These support the contention that more is to be gained by obtaining convergence between the entrants' conceptions, universities' courses and industry's needs than by attempting to attract more schoolchildren.
