Abstract

Sleep is essential for the proper functioning and general health of the body, playing a crucial role in body homeostasis. Given this scenario, the aim of this study was to discuss the biopsychological processes involved in maintaining sleep. It consisted of a descriptive, cross-sectional and qualitative study, characterized as a narrative literature review. The bibliographic materials were collected through search platforms such as PubMed and SciELO, using the descriptors "sleep", "sleep deprivation" and "sleep hygiene" in their Portuguese and English versions, used individually and in different combinations. It was observed that lack of sleep can lead to a series of adverse cognitive and physiological consequences and diseases. This condition poses a threat to mental and physical health, since the production of the sleep hormone melatonin is affected by prolonged exposure to screens. It was concluded that the adoption of a healthy lifestyle, with a focus on good quality sleep, is related to a better physiological, physical and psychological condition. However, it is important to pay attention to modern behaviors which have contributed to sleep disorders.
