Memorialization of Alexander II in Samara: Provincial Experience in Creating an Imperial Commorative Narrative

В статье исследуются процесс мемориализации императора Александра II в Самаре в 1880-е гг. На основе документов Центрального государственного архива Самарской области выявлены инициаторы и их мотивы, выделены этапы создания «места памяти» и реконструировано содержание коммеморативного нарратива. Открытие памятника состоялось в 1889 г. и было вписано в общероссийский процесс мемориализации Александра II. Коммеморативный нарратив включал сюжеты социально-экономического развития России и региона, укрепления государства и армии, расширения границ империи, а также идеи панславизма. Сооружение памятника стало попыткой локального сообщества выйти на общеимперский уровень и создать мемориал всероссийского значения. The article examines the process of memorialization of Emperor Alexander II in Samara in the 1880s. On the basis of the documents of the Central State Archive of the Samara Region, the initiators and their motives are identified, the stages of creating a “place of memory” are highlighted and the content of the commemorative narrative is reconstructed. The opening of the monument took place in 1889 and was included in the all-Russian process of memorialization of Alexander II. The commemorative narrative included plots of the socio-economic development of Russia and a separate region, the strengthening of the state and the army, the expansion of the borders of the empire, as well as the ideas of Pan-Slavism. The construction of the monument was an attempt by the local community to reach the general imperial level and create a memorial of all-Russian significance.
