1. Bruce Western, a Fellow of the American Academy since 2007, is Professor of Sociology at Harvard University; he is also Director of the Multidisciplinary Program in Inequality and Social Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School. His publications include Punishment and Inequality in America (2006) and Between Class and Market: Postwar Unionization in the Capitalist Democracies (1997). He is Codirector of the Academy's project on The Challenge of Mass Incarceration in America.
2. Becky Pettit is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Washington. Her publications include Gendered Tradeoffs: Family, Social Policy, and Economic Inequality in Twenty-One Countries (with Jennifer L.
