Abstract
The growing number of hypnosis-related dissertations accepted by American universities represents an index of the recognition of hypnosis as a legitimate subject of scientific inquiry. In recent years, the number of these dissertations has increased at a phenomenal rate. The purpose of this study was to review listings of doctoral dissertations relating to hypnosis during the period from 1923 to 1980. Factors studied included topics, dates of acceptance, and studies in disciplines other than psychology. Recent trends are also reviewed as a basis for the prediction of future developments.
