Abstract
To assist the Charleston, Illinois, Police Department attain a better understanding of the community it serves, a survey of 205 residents' perceptions of crime and law enforcement was conducted, Analysis indicated that the majority of people were most concerned with having their homes broken into at night, juvenile delinquency, and speeding vehicles. Minor concerns about personal safety and large parties were also noted. Respondents, however, also indicated an opposition to stationary patrol and to the formal handling of juveniles by the police. It was recommended that the police develop a publicity campaign to inform the public of existing police programs designed to reduce speeding, juvenile delinquency, and large parties, which the Charleston Police Department is currently doing.
