Abstract
A group of middle managers in two medium-sized business enterprises completed the Ghiselli Self-description Inventory, an empirically based instrument designed to identify the traits and talents of successful managers. These middle managers were also evaluated by their vice presidents as to whether they had achieved enough success to warrant consideration for promotion. The Inventory failed to distinguish between those who were successful ( n = 11) and those who were unsuccessful ( n = 13) managers.
