Abstract
49 black, lower-socioeconomic, adolescents who ranged in age from 12 to 17 yr. were tested for their ability to conserve mass, weight, and volume. 67% or 33 were able to conserve mass while 71% or 35 conserved weight. However, only 24% ( n = 12) passed the volume conservation test. These results support other findings which question Piaget's assertion that adolescents are able to perform the abstract task of conserving volume.
