Note on the Position of the Alcoholic in the Therapeutic Programme

Abstract

The similarities between student volunteers for therapy and alcoholic volunteers for treatment are briefly described. It appears to be evident that alcoholics who stay in treatment are not so much “real character disorder types” but are rather neurotics who are willing to admit poor family and social relationships. It is highly feasible that personality tests, utilizing alcoholic volunteers for treatment, may principally be tapping both the alcoholics' realistic self-appraisal of his social situation, and his inability to deal with his social environment.
