Abstract
Stereokinetic motion percepts are described and analyzed. The fluctuations of three visual systems, the near-far, one object-multiple object, and anchor point mechanisms are shown to be independent, and the consequences of the fluctuations for phenomenal motion are examined. The main current theoretical concepts of motion perception fail to account for all the observations reported. Speculations on the function of the anchor point mechanism and on how motion data may be processed are advanced.
