Personality Traits of Teachers Nominated as Strong and Weak

Abstract

Teachers who were nominated as strong or weak by curriculum consultants were asked to rate themselves on Gough's (1960) Adjective Check List. Statistically significant results indicate more women were nominated as strong, more men as weak, more weak teachers delayed returning the questionnaire until pressed to do so, one adjective was checked more frequently by the strong group and seven by the weak. Both groups approached the mean on Gough's scales and few group differences occurred. Strong teachers appear to conform to the cultural stereotype of “teacher.”
