Abstract
It was noted that the usefulness of subception in the analysis of problems in perception and personality is dependent upon the hypothetical autonomic discriminatory process being more sensitive than the conscious discriminatory process. A recently proposed index (Chun & Sarbin, 1968) of subception was analyzed and found not to require greater autonomic sensitivity as a condition for subception; it was shown that random nondiscriminatory autonomic responding could result in subception of discriminatory verbal responding given this index. A simple graphic analytical procedure based upon modern psychophysical techniques unavailable to Lazarus and McCleary (1951) is recommended and demonstrated.
