Abstract

Both members of 39 dating couples provided ratings of perceived intelligence on Date and Ideal Date scales. The two ratings were significantly correlated for 18 engaged individuals but not for 35 occasional or even 25 steady daters. The results are interpreted in terms of the assumption of a commitment to marriage, a commitment which may seem least risky when the potential partner's characteristics appear to match one's ideal.
