Abstract
Prolonged visual fixation of words was hypothesized to affect subjects' (60 women and 20 men) perception of the words rather than directly affecting the meaningfulness of the words. A tachistoscopic search was used. The accuracy of the word search varied as much with the perceptual characteristics of the target words as with their semantic characteristics. The hypothesis was partially confirmed.
