Abstract
Cooperation and competition have not been adequately studied as independent variables. The Multiple Solitaire Paradigm is presented as a method for examining the differential effects of cooperation and competition on personality, situation, and task variables. The rules and procedures for using the paradigm are presented and the usefulness of the paradigm in studying the effects of instructions, reinforcement, and task interdependence on cooperation and competition is discussed.
