Abstract
In rating 14 criteria upon which grades can be based, 411 students responded to a mailed survey on grading and indicated their assessment of the weight faculty place on these criteria when formulating final course grades. Analysis indicated that the students believed that faculty place primary emphasis on examinations and papers with much less weight placed on a combination of other criteria, e.g., effort and improvement.
