Abstract
This essay points to some of the limitations of statistics in the field of psychology and elsewhere. These include a tendency for sophisticated calculations and software programs to convey an unwarranted level of validity, a loss of personal identity as individuals are placed in categories, a focus on “central tendency” that may miss matters of true importance, and a devaluation of intuitive intellectual functions and of human uniqueness.
