Abstract
Research testing the validity of the hypothesis that Card IV of the Rorschach can be viewed as the “father” card and Card VII, the “mother” card was reviewed. Essentially the research suggests that such symbolic interpretation of the Rorschach stimuli is most characteristic of children and in particular emotionally disturbed children, but not adults, either normal or schizophrenic. The assumption that Cards IV and VII have universal symbolic meaning was, thus, called into question. A critical analysis of the research stratagems used in testing this hypothesis was offered and some suggestions made for future research.
