Effects of Levels of Motor Activity on Visual Thresholds for Activity-Related Words and Pictographs

Abstract

5 levels of muscular activity were studied to determine their effects on identification thresholds of tachistoscopically presented words and figures that were identical, opposite, and neutral in meaning to the activity of pushing closed a spring-loaded drawer. Results showed an increase in thresholds for stimuli identical in their relation to the activity and a decrease in thresholds for stimuli opposite in relation to the activity. No significant differences were observed for the effects of levels of activity on recognition thresholds. Future directions for research are discussed.
