Surgical removal of an orbital liposarcoma in a dog using the cavitron ultrasonic surgical aspirator

Abstract

AbstractA 9‐year‐old boxer presented with unilateral exophthalmos, reduced globe retropulsion and central exposure keratitis in the right eye. On the superolateral orbital quadrant, a firm, well‐limited mass in close proximity to the globe was detected. Ultrasonic and computed tomography examinations confirmed a retrobulbar mass. The biopsy examination revealed the presence of a tumour of adipocytes, consistent with hibernoma. The retrobulbar mass was surgically removed using dorsal orbitotomy with a cavitron ultrasonic surgical aspirator. Complete retrobulbar mass removal was achieved with minimal and transient postoperative complications. The histopathological examination of the mass fragment obtained during surgery showed liposarcoma. Controlled computed tomography performed 4 months after surgery did not reveal signs of recurrence or metastasis. Ophthalmic examination was within normal limits during 1 year of follow‐up. The cavitation ultrasonic surgical aspirator allows precise mass excision with preservation of delicate orbital structures and is particularly useful in cases with challenging anatomical access.
