Abstract
Living with a long‐term skin condition, often without hope of cure or improvement, can be life altering or even life ruining. Clinicians working in dermatology are well placed to identify and support patients at risk of life impairment. Together with an accurate diagnosis and access to effective treatment, other aspects of care require consideration for dermatology patients to achieve their full life potential. Central to managing people with long‐term skin conditions is a holistic approach – an approach that reflects the individual needs and beliefs of patients and recognises that every patient’s experience is different, even with outwardly similar skin signs. Dermatology clinicians need an understanding of the psychological and social impact of skin conditions in order to provide optimal care. In this chapter we aim to provide an overview of challenges posed by living with a long‐term skin condition, discuss the need for a holistic approach to care and describe some key consultation skills useful in busy clinics.
