2. The “Habilitation” defines the qualification to conduct independent research and self-contained University teaching and is the key for access to a professorship in many European countries. During my Habilitation at the University of Graz (1996–1999) I was funded by a fellowship from the Austrian Academy of Sciences (APART fellowship) which meant I could focus on research and had no formal teaching obligations. I joined the faculty as Assistant Professor in November of 1999 and was subsequently appointed Associate Professor (with tenure) at the University of Graz in March of 2000.
