The Stereochemical Course of DmdC, an Enzyme Involved in the Degradation of Dimethylsulfoniopropionate

Abstract

AbstractThe acyl‐CoA dehydrogenase DmdC is involved in the degradation of the marine sulfur metabolite dimethylsulfonio propionate (DMSP) through the demethylation pathway. The stereochemical course of this reaction was investigated through the synthesis of four stereoselectively deuterated substrate surrogates carrying stereoselective deuterations at the α‐ or the β‐carbon. Analysis of the products revealed a specific abstraction of the 2‐pro‐R proton and of the 3‐pro‐S hydride, establishing an anti elimination for the DmdC reaction.
