Abstract

Abstract In 1990 the Royal College of Surgeons of England established the Comparative Audit Service to enable surgeons to compare their results with those of other colleagues. In addition, the large volume of collected data provides insight into national patterns of surgical practice. In 1992 data were collected for a range of operations including appendicectomy, resulting in by far the largest single analysis in the international literature of this common surgical problem.
