Abstract

Abstract The effects of gastric tube replacement have been studied experimentally in dogs. A gastric tube can replace the lower oesophagus and, if maintained 2.5-6 cm below the diaphragm, will prevent reflux. The gastric tube acts as a pressure barrier which is important in the prevention of reflux. Myotomy of the tube lowers the pressure barrier and allows free reflux. Atropine decreases the pressure within the gastric tube and gastrin increases the pressure within the tube.
