Large abdominal incisional hernias: Repair by fascial approximation reinforced with a stainless steel mesh

Abstract

Abstract One hundred and fifty large abdominal incisional hernias were treated following a standardized operating technique using metallic mesh (Toilinox®) and approximation of the anterior sheath of the rectus abdominis. The average follow-up was four years. Good clinical results without pain were found in more than 95 per cent of the patients. Recurrence occurred in 9.5 per cent of the patients. The complications, wound infection or parietal necrosis, never necessitated removal of the prosthesis. These results justify the use of this technique even when intra-abdominal septic procedure is associated.
