1. How could I possibly have missed not knowing how central Eric was to our successful development of the catalytic asymmetric AD? I mostly blame my being away so much of his first year-and-a-half (four months on the West Coast followed by a sabbatical in “real” Cambridge) plus my being a poor manager who's much better with molecules than with people. In truth however there is no adequate excuse.
2. Filling memory gaps was the intention when asking some former co-workers what they recalled about the lab's people and projects during Eric's tenure at MIT. It was a shock when their stories didn't reconcile with mine. My scientific AD narrative was pretty good but the human dynamic was off.
