Abstract
AbstractThe uptake of hydrogen in transport applications needs the further development of storage technologies. As discussed here, hydrogen can be stored physically based, as a gas, compressed or cold/cryo compressed, or a liquid, or it can be stored material‐based. The material‐based hydrogen storage technologies, despite having been supported in recent years by more intense research and development expenditure versus the physically based, have a technology readiness level (TRL) still very low. Therefore, physical hydrogen storage technologies of much better TRL, with some existing products only in need of further refinement, should become the preferential recipient of R&D expenditure, to deliver the immediate benefits needed.
