Severe lobar pulmonary cryptococcosis with a fatal outcome in a clinically normal Allen's swamp monkey (Allenopithecus nigroviridis)

AbstractA clinically normal, 13.5‐year‐old male Allen's swamp monkey (Allenopithecus nigroviridis) developed cardiac arrest and died shortly after anaesthetic induction for a routine examination. Gross examination of the lung revealed consolidation of the left caudal lobe, and cut surfaces exuded a purulent haemorrhagic discharge. Tissue impressions of the pulmonary tissue were consistent with Cryptococcus sp. Histological examination revealed that the infection was isolated to a single lung lobe, and Cryptococcus neoformans var. neoformans was confirmed by culture. This case report discusses the postmortem findings of a monkey with pulmonary cryptococcosis and the importance of considering routine screening in clinically normal guenons.
