Abstract
AbstractOtitis media (presumably caused by Mycoplasma bovis) is a frequently encountered problem with big economic implications in the Dutch veal calf industry. Conservative treatment using antibiotics, NSAIDs and corticosteroids is regularly unsuccessful. The affected calves usually start to waste due to pain and decreased feed intake. This report describes a novel treatment option, performing a myringotomy (surgical opening of the eardrum), combined with local antibiotic and corticosteroid therapy. The outcome was positive; in four out of five calves, the clinical signs resolved within 3 weeks after intervention. On‐farm myringotomy is a promising treatment option in persistent otitis media.
