The genus
Pelagerythrobacter
belonging to the family
Erythrobacteraceae
currently comprises four species with validly published names:
Pelagerythrobacter aerophilus
,
P
.
marensis
,
P
.
marinus
, and
P
.
rhizovicinus
. Members of
Pelagerythrobacter
inhabit various environments, such as surface and deep seawater as well as rhizosphere soil of a desert xerophyte. Cells are Gram‐stain‐negative and several members are motile by a polar flagellum. The main respiratory quinone is ubiquinone‐10. The major polar lipids are phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylglycerol (PG), and sphingoglycolipid (SGL). The predominant cellular fatty acid is an unsaturated octadecenoic acid of C
