Abstract

Abstract Spi.ro.plas.ma.ta'.ce.ae. N.L. neut. n. Spiroplasma , − atos , type genus of the family; − aceae , ending to denote a family; N.L. fem. pl. n. Spiroplasmataceae , the Spiroplasma family. Tenericutes / Mollicutes / Entomoplasmatales / Spiroplasmataceae Cells are helical (∼300 nm in diameter) during exponential growth, with rotatory, flexional, and translational motility. Genome size is variable: 780–2220 kb. DNA G + C content ranges from 24–31% (mol%). The temperature growth range varies among species from 5 to 41°C, with the optimum usually in the range of 30 to 32°C. Variable sterol requirement for growth. Procedures for determining sterol requirement are as described for the Family Entomoplasmataceae . Possess a phosphoenolpyruvate phosphotransferase system for glucose uptake. Reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) oxidase activity is located only in the cytoplasm. Unable to synthesize fatty acids from acetate. Hydrolysis of arginine is variable. Other characteristics are as described for the class and order. DNA G + C content (mol%) : 24–31 ( T m , Bd). Type genus : Spiroplasma Saglio et al. 1973 AL .
