The family
Miltoncostaeaceae
is a member of the order
Miltoncostaeales
. This family accommodates one genus,
Miltoncostaea
, composed of two validly published species named
Miltoncostaea marina
and
Miltoncostaea oceani
. Cells stain Gram‐negative and form rod‐shaped cells. Endospores are not observed. The members of this family are mesophilic and slightly halophilic. Strictly aerobic and chemoorganotrophic. The peptidoglycan contains
meso
‐diaminopimelic acid (
meso
‐Dpm) as diagnostic diamino acid and is of type A1γ'. The major respiratory quinone is menaquinone 7 (MK‐7). The polar lipid profile comprises phosphatidylglycerol (PG), unidentified phospholipids (PLs), and unidentified phosphoglycolipids (PGLs). Fatty acids are predominantly straight‐chain; branched fatty acids are also present. Isolated from marine sediments.
