Abstract
AbstractThe development of various diagnostic concepts and their continued refinement have enriched both clinical work and research. The proposal inDSM‐5for reconceptualization of a new “autism spectrum” disorder concept has some merit as well as some potential limitations. Clearly, major changes impact clinical work and research (particularly research involving longitudinal or epidemiological samples). It seems likely that we are entering a period in which a range of diagnostic approaches will be used; whether this will help or hinder research remains an important question.
