Abstract
A number of researchers and theorists have argued that race is one of the main predictors of criminal offending. However, the relationship between race and crime is more complex, nuanced, and nonlinear than portrayed by research or the media. This entry discusses variables and their relationship with race, including unemployment, poverty, disorganized neighborhoods, and street gangs. It also considers the mass incarceration of people of color and multicultural populations in the USA and the push for criminal justice reform to address the issue of systemic racism.
