Abstract
This entry provides a broad definition of probation that encompasses its most common legal framework and its central purposes. These are placed within the context of the history of its international development and a critical account of how the concept has been transformed in England and Wales by increased political attention and accountability. In turn, the latter highlights the tensions between notions of public service and privatization.
