Abstract
Sociologists define deviance as behavior that violates a norm and is judged negatively by a society. Many, however, misunderstand this conceptualization, instead assuming that the study of deviant behavior is the study of inherently wrong behavior. This absolutist conception, while relevant to our understandings of the origin of norms and reactions, is not a sociological conceptualization of deviance.
